German Defence Minister: Excluding EU from Ukraine Talks Could Change Relations with US

(Patria) - If the European Union is excluded from negotiations on the Ukrainian issue, it could mark a turning point in Europe's relations with the United States, said German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, as reported by TASS.

"This could prove to be a historic, pivotal moment for transatlantic relations, after which we risk going our separate ways," he said at the Munich Security Conference.

"The choice we make will determine whether we live in peace or in a crisis situation, and it will also define our future and the future of generations to come in Europe," Pistorius said.

"We must negotiate from a position of strength," he added.

The German defence chief emphasised that Europe and Ukraine should be part of the negotiations to resolve the conflict. According to him, "territorial issues" and other topics should be discussed at the negotiating table.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on 12 February. They discussed prospects for ending the war in Ukraine, bilateral relations, and a number of other topics. They agreed to maintain contact and hold a personal meeting.
