German Chancellor announced new arms deliveries to Israel

(Patria) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced new deliveries of German weapons to Israel, opposing the French President, who called for weapons not to be supplied if they were used in the war in Gaza.

- We in the government have made decisions that will ensure further imminent deliveries - Scholz told the Bundestag during a commemorative debate on Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

- We have not decided not to supply weapons - Scholz added, responding to accusations from the conservative opposition, which pointed to a months-long halt in deliveries and "cracks in German solidarity" with Israel.

- We have supplied weapons and will continue to supply weapons - Scholz said again, without specifying the type, quantity, or purpose of the weapons.

French President Emmanuel Macron recently called for an end to arms supplies to Israel used in Gaza, which caused anger from the Israeli Prime Minister and some caution in Berlin, a traditional friend of Israel.

- Macron's statements caused great surprise and discomfort in Germany - said German political scientist and international relations expert Daniela Schwarzer from the Bertelsmann Foundation this week during a meeting with foreign journalists in Berlin.

- We see a new Macron statement that has created great tension which, from a German perspective, will be very difficult to overcome - Schwarzer said.

- The federal government has been refusing export permits for the supply of ammunition, and even tank spare parts to Israel for weeks and months - said the leader of the German conservative opposition, Friedrich Merz, in the Bundestag, criticizing the government.

Israel is engaged on several fronts, in the war against Hamas in Gaza and against Hezbollah in Lebanon, where it has also been conducting ground operations since Monday.

The state of Israel is also threatening a response to the large rocket attack from Iran that occurred last Tuesday, Hina reports.
