German police call for return of border controls

The German police union is calling for the return of passport controls along national borders due to the growing immigration crisis in Germany and across the EU, AFP reports, as reported by the Patria News Agency.

The union president says the idea of re-regulating borders within the EU is a good policy for controlling immigration, reports IBT.

"From a surveillance perspective, the return of border controls would be the best of all measures," said Rainer Wendt. "Germany should not be too eager to take the threat of border controls off the table".

The assessment comes at a time when an increasing number of European countries are strengthening security controls on key railway routes, at airports, and on highways.

Germany is expected to accept up to half a million refugees this year, mostly from Syria, Kosovo, Serbia, and Albania. The German right openly calls for people coming from the Balkans to be sent back home, and the police are showing increasing interest in accurately and thoroughly determining the validity of asylum applications.
