German police clashed on Friday evening with far-right supporters demonstrating against the opening of a refugee centre in Heidenau, eastern Germany, reports the news agency Patria.
At the call of the far-right NPD party, several hundred people demonstrated on Friday evening against the planned arrival in this town near Dresden of hundreds of refugees. After the protest ended, individuals blocked the road, prompting police intervention using tear gas, while supporters threw stones, bottles and firecrackers. Several people on both sides were injured.
By Saturday morning the situation had calmed down. There were no more demonstrators in front of the former large warehouse, empty for two years, converted to accommodate several hundred refugees. Police officers remained on the scene. About 250 people were successfully housed there overnight from Friday to Saturday.
