German police today detained 400 left-wing activists who were protesting the national convention of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Stuttgart, reports the news agency Patria.
Several hundred left-wing demonstrators today attempted to prevent right-wingers from entering the AfD party conference.
The DPA news agency reported that the demonstrators chanted "refugees can stay, Nazis must go", while around 2,000 members of the AfD party arrived at the centre for the convention. Protesters temporarily blocked a nearby highway and set tires on fire on the long road leading to the centre where the Alternative for Germany party meeting will be held.
Around 1,000 police officers were deployed in front of the building where the conference is being held to prevent violence and clashes between members of the right-wing party and protesters. It is expected that during the meeting, the right-wing AfD party will present itself as openly anti-Islamic, reported the BBC.
The AfD wants to ban burqas and minarets in Germany. The right-wing party's conference began this morning despite the protest.
The right-wing AfD won seven seats in the European Parliament in the 2014 elections, gaining popularity due to its harsh statements against the arrival of migrants in Germany, reports Beta.
