(Patria) - The Netherlands will soon deliver the first of 24 promised F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, the outgoing Dutch government announced on Monday, Reuters reported.
The necessary permits for the delivery of the aircraft to Ukraine have been approved, Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren said in a letter to parliament ahead of the government's transition on Tuesday, after months of coalition building following last year's elections. She declined to specify how many aircraft would be in the first delivery and when they would arrive in Ukraine for security reasons.
The Netherlands has been one of the driving forces behind the international coalition to supply Ukraine with F-16s to strengthen its air defenses against Russia.
The Dutch government had previously delivered an F-16 training facility to Romania, where Ukrainian pilots and ground crew are being taught to fly and maintain the aircraft in combat.
Ollongren said in April that she expected the promised deliveries from Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United States to begin within a few months.
