Series of explosions in churches and hotels in Sri Lanka

11:00 At least 138 people were killed in a series of bomb attacks carried out this morning in three churches and three hotels in Sri Lanka. The targets of the bomb attacks were three churches in the cities of Kochchikade, Negombo and Batticaloa, and three luxury hotels Kingsbury, Cinnamon Grand and Shangri La in the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo.

The attacks occurred on the Catholic holiday of Easter, and local media report that there are tourists among the victims. The BBC reports that at least nine foreigners are among the dead.

7:00 At least 50 people were killed and more than 200 were injured on Sunday in Sri Lanka in multiple explosions at several locations, including churches and five-star hotels in the capital, police said, as reported by dpa agency.

Explosions were reported at several locations in and around Colombo, according to police data.

So far, the initial figures on the number of victims do not match, with the France Press agency reporting that 42 people were killed, while Reuters states that at least 20 are dead and 280 injured. 

One of the affected churches, St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo, north of Colombo, published photos of the devastation inside the church on its Facebook page, showing blood on the pews and floor, and requested public assistance.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the explosions.
