Nikolić wrote to Queen Elizabeth about Srebrenica: Serbs fought against Turks, but also NATO!

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić sent a letter to British Queen Elizabeth regarding London's initiative to adopt a Resolution on Srebrenica in the UN Security Council, "Danas" reported, according to the Patria News Agency.

The letter was delivered to the Serbian Embassy in London, and there is no confirmation yet that it has been handed over.

-Your Majesty, I am personally addressing you, aware of the fact that my address could be interpreted as undiplomatic, but I must, so that we do not make a mistake and return the Balkan region to difficult times of conflict that we all want to forget, Nikolić told Queen Elizabeth.

-I most kindly ask you to pay attention to a serious issue that could spoil Serbia's years-long efforts aimed at making our modest contribution to the overall stability of Southeastern Europe. Namely, it is about the draft Resolution on Srebrenica, submitted by your country to the UN Security Council, stated the Serbian president in the letter sent on July 2.

-We are a nation quite different from others of similar size or power. Whenever we were attacked throughout history, we opted for resistance and the fight for freedom. On many occasions, our actions coincided with the established international position, the fight, and the goals of your nation. We never wanted to give up, to back down, nor to have others decide for us what we would commit to. Such a stance was very demanding, often dangerous, but in the end, it brought relief and was healthy for our spirit, the letter states.

Nikolić adds:

-I have in mind, among other things, the First World War and the Second World War, in which Serbs made the greatest possible sacrifice. In these two wars, we lost millions of our youngest, smartest, and bravest people, which resulted in a radical decrease in our population and prospects for the future.

All this was done in the conviction that freedom and human dignity are supreme values. We were never skilled at cold calculation of our roles and intentions; instead, we were guided by feelings, Nikolić emphasized.

-I believe you are aware that Serbs fought against the Turks, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Germans, and then their Reich. We opposed many others, even NATO in 1999, in the belief that we had to defend the territory of Kosovo, which historically belongs to us, Nikolić added in the letter, addressed to "Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, London".
