New York: Eight dead, 11 injured after attack, attacker in hospital

Eight people were killed and 11 injured, including children, in an attack on Manhattan. The truck driver hit pedestrians on Manhattan while driving the wrong way on a bike path along the highway, after which he also hit a school bus. The suspect in the Manhattan attack is reportedly from Uzbekistan and is named Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, US media report.

They state that Saipov is 29 years old and came to the US in 2010.

He has a driver's license issued in Tampa, Florida, NBC reports.

After entering the bike path, the truck crashed into a school bus, injuring at least two children and two adults.

The driver then got out of the vehicle with two objects that looked like pistols. Police opened fire on him and wounded him in the stomach, after which he was arrested. He was taken to hospital and is out of danger.

Six people died at the scene, and two later in local hospitals.

US President Donald Trump commented on the attack in New York on Twitter, describing the attacker as a "very sick and deranged person."

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack a "cowardly terrorist attack" at a press conference.

A spokesman for the US Department of Homeland Security described the incident as an "apparent act of terrorism."
