(Patria) - The hill in Klepci, located between the villages of Klepci, Prebilovci, and Gnjilišta near Čapljina, looks like any other elevation at first glance - but for centuries it hid a secret that was accidentally discovered by firefighters from Čapljina.
While clearing vegetation for the Camino trail, firefighters from Čapljina noticed an unusual structure and traces indicating remnants from the Illyrian period. They informed journalists about their discovery, opening a new chapter about the rich and layered past of this region.
This area was inhabited as early as prehistory, as evidenced by the remains of hillforts and dry stone walls characteristic of Illyrian tribes. Traces of their presence are still visible today, indicating an organized way of life and defensive structures that dominated this area.
With the arrival of the Roman Empire, the area of Klepci gained additional significance. It was integrated into the network of Roman roads connecting the interior with the Neretva valley, which enabled the development of settlements and economic activities. Remains of these communications are still visible in the terrain today, with particular attention drawn to the Roman bridge, whose route extended towards Tasovčići and the Hotanj hill. Although weathered by time, the bridge still defies the ravages of time, testifying to the construction skills of that era.
During Ottoman rule, this region took on a new role. Villages, agriculture, and transport routes developed, and the hill played an important role in organizing daily life and overseeing the wider area.
An Illyrian tomb is also located at this site, providing further confirmation of the long continuity of life and the importance of this area throughout history.
However, despite its historical and cultural value, the site faces threats. A quarry is located in the immediate vicinity, raising concerns about the potential devastation of this valuable area.
In the wider area, there is also the bridge in Klepci, known as Mustajbeg's Bridge over the Bregava riverbed, which has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, further confirming the significance of this region in historical and cultural terms.
In the surroundings are also buildings from later periods, which are also witnesses to historical eras, and each of them carries a story worth hearing and seeing.
