(Patria) - Neurologists warn that one evening habit can secretly harm the brain and even lead to its shrinkage — the consumption of alcohol before sleep.
Experts emphasize that quality sleep is crucial for brain health, as the brain regenerates, processes information, and stores memories during the night.
Poor sleep is linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
“Alcohol reduces brain volume,” warns neurologist Dr. Fawad Mian, explaining that alcohol is toxic to brain cells and interferes with their development.
Parts of the brain responsible for memory, balance, planning, and decision-making are particularly affected, writes Parade.
What are the consequences of a “drink” before sleep
Although alcohol may initially have a soporific effect, doctors state that later in the night it disrupts the deep sleep phases that are most important for brain recovery. Consequences can include restless sleep, frequent awakenings, problems with concentration and memory, and, in the long term, an increased risk of cognitive decline.
Neurologist Dr. Jasdeep Hundal says that recent research shows that even moderate alcohol consumption is not entirely safe for brain health.
Instead of alcohol, experts recommend several habits that can help preserve brain functions:
going to bed and waking up at the same time every day
an evening walk after a meal
avoiding screens and social media before sleep
“The brain needs time to switch off and enter a state of quality rest,” say neurologists.
