(Patria) - Several sources confirmed yesterday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has in principle approved a ceasefire with Lebanon, which his war cabinet should confirm today.
According to the proposal, the Israeli army would withdraw from southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah would move its heavy weaponry north of the Litani River, 25 kilometers from the border with Israel.
At the same time, the Lebanese army would guarantee security in the border area together with the existing UN peacekeeping forces, and the ceasefire would be monitored by a committee of five countries led by the USA.
- We are making progress on this issue. I have said many times - our goal is very clear, to push Hezbollah north of the Litani River. We have not completed that, but we are close to the goal.
I hope and expect that the government can meet soon and discuss the ceasefire. For us, what is crucial is what will follow the ceasefire, and that is that Hezbollah will not be able to return to that border - said Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.
