Netanyahu in response to Biden rejects any Palestinian sovereignty in post-war Gaza

(Patria) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "will not compromise on Israeli control" over Gaza and that it is "contrary to a Palestinian state," rejecting US President Joe Biden's suggestion that creative solutions could bridge the wide gaps between the leaders' positions on Palestinian statehood, AP reported.

Netanyahu published his statement on social media a day after his first conversation with Biden in nearly a month.

Speaking about his administration's position on Friday, Biden said "there are various types of two-state solutions" and when asked if a two-state solution was impossible with Netanyahu in power, Biden replied: "No, it isn't".

Following Netanyahu's statement, the spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on the United States to move forward.

"It is time for the United States to recognize the State of Palestine, not just talk about the two-state solution," said Nabil Abu Rudeineh.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the "rejection of the two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians and the denial of the right to statehood to the Palestinian people is unacceptable".

Speaking in Uganda, he said that this rejection would "indefinitely prolong" the conflict.
