(Patria) - In response to the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, protesters in Baghdad this morning attempted to storm the fortified Green Zone, which also houses the US Embassy.
Clashes with Iraqi security forces broke out on Sunday morning, writes CNN.
Video footage obtained by CNN shows clashes between protesters and Iraqi security forces on the "July 14th Bridge", which leads across the Tigris River into the Green Zone.
The footage shows flashes and smoke, and the protesters then retreated. The Green Zone in Baghdad houses the offices of the Iraqi government and several foreign embassies, including the US Embassy.
At the same time, large crowds marched in the southern provinces of Dhi Qar and Basra, condemning Khamenei's killing.

The Iraqi government declared three days of mourning and offered condolences to Iran following the death of the Supreme Leader.
Government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi stated that the joint US-Israeli attack on Iran was an "obvious act of aggression and a reprehensible act that violates all humanitarian and moral norms".
Pakistan's Edhi rescue service reported that six people were killed and several injured in riots that broke out near the US consulate in Karachi.
Protesters attempted to storm the US diplomatic mission in the Pakistani city. Several people were injured as police dispersed the crowd.
