No public pronouncement of sentence for Sanjin Sefić

SARAJEVO, (Patria) – The sentence for Sanjin Sefić, scheduled to be pronounced tomorrow at the Cantonal Court, will not be delivered in the presence of family members and the public, in accordance with the decision aimed at preventing coronavirus in BiH.

According to the decision jointly made yesterday by the Municipal and Cantonal Courts in Sarajevo and the KS Prosecutor's Office, a special regime of operation for courts and the Prosecutor's Office is in effect until April 3.

In accordance with this regime, parties are not allowed to enter the buildings of the KS courts and Prosecutor's Office after 1 PM, while working hours are shortened to 2 PM.

Sefić's sentence will likely be announced in the form of a press release due to public interest in this case.

Sefić is charged with the criminal offenses of a grave criminal offense against public traffic safety (Article 332 of the Criminal Code of FBiH) and the criminal offense of failure to provide assistance to an injured person after a traffic accident (Article 337, paragraph 2).
On the night of October 10, 2016, at a pedestrian crossing on Sarajevo's main road, driving at a speed exceeding 100 km/h and running a red light, he hit students Selma Agić and Edita Malkoč with his car, who died from their injuries. Sefić fled the scene, and on the morning of October 11, he fled to Serbia, from where he was extradited on January 9, 2017.

In September 2018, the Cantonal Court sentenced Sefić to 14.5 years in prison, while his accomplices were acquitted. The Supreme Court of FBiH granted the appeal of the KS Prosecutor's Office, the first-instance verdict was annulled, and the proceedings were repeated. The new trial for Sefić and his accomplices (except for his sister Sara Sefić) began in early July 2019. His accomplices Dino Alić, Saud Nišić, and Amar Salihović signed plea agreements and were convicted in separate proceedings.
