(Patria) - Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the United States to silence the United Nations Security Council, while Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza, Russia's Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said on Wednesday, TASS reported.
"We will continue to strongly advocate for an end to violence against Palestinians. Without a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and piety with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to silence the entire Council with their hands in an effort to encourage the further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," Nebenzya said in a speech to the Security Council.
According to Nebenzya, the Security Council should "bring peace, stability, and prosperity to the Middle East".
"No one, including the United States and other accommodating representatives of the West, has the right to obstruct these legitimate aspirations," said the Russian diplomat.
Previously, the US used its veto power in the UN Security Council to block a draft resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict prepared by ten non-permanent members of the Security Council, which called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
This is the fifth time the United States has blocked a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza since the escalation began last October. The US has also blocked Palestine from obtaining full membership in the UN, TASS states.
