The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dragan Čović, met today in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
The NATO Secretary congratulated BiH on the reforms implemented so far, and also stated that it is important for BiH to continue with reforms as previously agreed upon by NATO and BiH authorities.
The previous agreement for the activation of the Membership Action Plan (MAP) for BiH into NATO consisted, among other things, of registering all military assets in BiH to the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The President of the BiH entity RS, Milorad Dodik, and the President of HDZ BiH, Dragan Čović, attempted to get MAP activated without military assets in BiH being registered to the state of BiH, but rather to the entities and cantons, but NATO rejected such a proposal.
This was confirmed today by Stoltenberg, when he said that it is important for BiH to continue "as we agreed".
Although unconstitutional and illegal, the authorities in the BiH entity RS have in the meantime adopted a Resolution on the military neutrality of that BiH entity, until neighboring Serbia decides otherwise. On the other hand, Dodik's partner Čović continues to speak optimistically about BiH as a future NATO member.
Čović said today in Brussels that BiH is fulfilling its obligations regarding the Tallinn criteria, adding that the process is slow but that domestic authorities are making significant progress.
"Count on us, and we remain committed to reforms. Today we are ready to say that we want to activate the Action Plan as soon as possible," said Čović, reports NAP.
