NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed that Alliance members are considering joining the fight against ISIL, but they will not go into armed conflict alone, writes AP, reports Patria.
- No decision has been made. The discussion is ongoing, but it is absolutely out of the question for NATO to engage in combat operations – Stoltenberg said.
NATO has supported airstrikes on ISIL positions, but has stated that it does not plan to engage in ground operations alone.
According to AP, US President Donald Trump is expected to try to pressure NATO members to join the fight against ISIL in Syria and Iraq at next week's meeting.
Stoltenberg reiterated that the best option for fighting terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq is training local fighters.
