Americans' Trust in State Institutions Continues to Decline

(Patria) - Public trust in the US government, judiciary, and military has plummeted, placing the US behind most other Group of Seven (G7) countries, according to a new Gallup analysis, VOA reports.

Approximately 68 percent of Americans have no confidence in their government. Confidence in the judiciary is at a low of 42 percent.

Even the US military, a traditionally popular institution, has seen a decline in public trust, from 90 percent in 2021 to 81 percent last year.

The G7 comprises the leading industrial nations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Among G7 members, Germany showed the lowest level of public trust in its military, with nearly 60 percent expressing a lack of confidence.

The American public appears divided on the issue of the military budget, even though the United States spends more on its military than all other G7 countries combined.

Approximately 35 percent believe the spending is too high, 29 percent believe it is too low, and 33 percent believe it is about right.

- There is no single indicator that explains all of this. These figures are part of a broader trend among Americans that extends beyond people's trust in political institutions, Benedict Vigers, a Gallup analyst, told Voice of America.

Experts link public trust in government institutions to the quality of public services, effective measures against corruption and abuse of power, and progress in addressing income and wealth inequality.

- The effectiveness of public institutions depends on the trust that citizens and businesses place in them, the World Bank stated in its report last year.

Public trust in American institutions is declining outside of government bodies as well.

Trust in churches and organized religion has been steadily declining, with a record 30 percent of Americans expressing "very little" confidence last year – the highest such figure since Gallup began tracking this issue in 1973.

The erosion of trust also affects the media, with more than 40 percent of Americans reporting very little confidence, particularly in newspapers and television.
