Violence at the stadium: Russia faces expulsion from the championship

After UEFA fined it with a suspended disqualification and a fine of 150,000 EUR, Russia also faces expulsion from the EURO 2016 championship.

Physical clashes between Russian and English fans on the streets of Marseille began before the match, escalating at the stadium itself.

Russian fans attacked English fans, who had to retreat in search of a safe place.

Ian Allsop, 45, from Luton, was beaten with a baseball bat by a Russian hooligan in the Old Port.

The builder, who has never missed an England match, said he would never return to Marseille.

- Suddenly, about 300 Russians appeared out of nowhere. They just walked through the crowd of English fans who were standing and singing. They started hitting everyone in front of them. One started to hit me and I ducked. Then someone else hit me on the arm with a wooden stick.

- The Russians were well organized. They wore body armor, and some wore English jerseys to blend in with the English fans, Allsop told the media.

UEFA's Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body met in Paris to consider the case. It was decided to impose a suspended disqualification and a fine of 150,000 EUR on Russia.

However, any new incident caused by the public in the stadiums during matches of the European Championship in which Russia participates will lead to the suspension being lifted and Russia being expelled from EURO 2016, writes the English Mirror, reports NAP.
