(Patria) - Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (70) must wear an electronic ankle monitor, Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled.
Bolsonaro is accused of conspiring to overthrow the government of his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after his electoral defeat in 2022.
According to the court's decision, Bolsonaro is not allowed to be active on social media and must be under house arrest at night.
Presiding Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered these measures because he is charged with coercion, obstruction of justice, and an attack on sovereignty.
Bolsonaro's trial has entered the final phase of closing arguments. He is accused of attempting to "destroy the democratic rule of law," which he denies.
Bolsonaro's supporters stormed the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Brasília on January 8, 2023, shortly after Lula took office.
U.S. President Donald Trump has taken his side. In a letter sent to him on Thursday, published on Truth Social, Trump demanded that his trial be immediately halted.
Trump previously announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods starting August 1, citing among the reasons the actions of the Brazilian judiciary against Bolsonaro.
