Tensions from the Middle East spread to the Eastern Mediterranean

(Patria) - Greece has deployed two frigates and F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus after a reported drone caused the evacuation of Paphos International Airport and the closure of airspace. The incident did not result in an attack, but it showed how tensions from the Middle East are quickly spreading to the Eastern Mediterranean.

HS Psara – a Hydra-class frigate, in service since 1998. Multi-purpose, with a crew of 198 members, equipped with the Centaur anti-drone system and a Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk helicopter.

HS Kimon – a new 4,500-ton frigate, designed by Naval Group, capable of anti-ship, anti-air, anti-submarine warfare, and special forces projection. This is Kimon's first operational mission.

F-16 – two fighter jets deployed to strengthen air defence.

Greek Minister of Defence Nikos Dendias assessed the situation as serious and is in constant contact with Cypriot Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas. The Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff is also arriving in Cyprus to coordinate with local authorities.

The airport evacuation and warnings from foreign embassies have caused concern among residents, but authorities emphasize that the precautionary measures are aimed at protecting civilians and avoiding panic, especially after the previous drone attack on RAF Akrotiri.
