(Patria) - Shortly after 11:30 a.m., an attacker wielding a knife attacked and wounded several people, including a police officer, at a far-right demonstration in the German city of Mannheim. Police shot the attacker, thus preventing even greater bloodshed.
In explicit footage, the knife-wielding attacker runs toward a small group of rally participants, pushes several people to the ground, and stabs them with a knife. The attacker was surrounded by several police officers, one of whom was stabbed in the back of the head. Police, who were on the scene within seconds because they were guarding the rally, shot the attacker.
Three people were injured, including one police officer.
All were taken to the hospital.
The attacker's first target was an elderly man, Michael Stürzenberger, an activist known to the public as a vocal critic of Islam, who was preparing to speak at the rally. He sustained injuries.
A small group of far-right supporters gathered at the square. Flags of Germany and Israel were displayed next to the stand.
