(Patria) - Two Swedish nationals were killed last night in Brussels, just hours before the start of the EURO 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden, and one other person was wounded in the attack. The attacker, identified as a Tunisian illegally residing in Belgium, is still being sought.
Federal prosecutor's spokesman Eric van Duys said there is no evidence that the perpetrator, who remains at large, is in any way connected to the situation in Israel and the Middle East. The attack occurred a few hours before the start of the EURO 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden, and the two killed are Swedish nationals. The third victim is also a Swede. The perpetrator got off a motorcycle near Place Sainctelette and opened fire with an automatic weapon before fleeing.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called on Swedes in Belgium to be cautious and to follow the instructions of the Belgian authorities.
All Swedes in Belgium will receive a text message on their phones urging them to be cautious and to follow the instructions of the Belgian authorities, Kristersson said.
Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Strommer stressed that the Swedish government is in contact with the Belgian authorities to obtain as much information as possible.
