(Patria) – After the ceasefire was reached in Gaza, the militant movement Hamas is expected to release 48 Israeli hostages today, who have been held captive for more than two years. According to available information, 20 of them are believed to be alive, while the fate of the others has not yet been fully confirmed.
The release of the hostages is part of a broader peace agreement under which Israel will in turn release 250 Palestinian prisoners, as well as more than 1,700 people arrested during the offensive on Gaza.
Civilians, families, and friends of the captured Israelis are already gathering at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv. The air is filled with anticipation, hope, and tears – but also disbelief that the long-standing conflict could finally come to an end.
“The war is over,” said US President Donald Trump during his journey to the Middle East, announcing a new chapter in global peace efforts. According to the plan, Trump will address the Israeli parliament and then travel to the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where he will lead a major peace summit.
The gathering is expected to include at least 20 world leaders – among them leaders of the European Union, Arab countries, and the United Nations.
If everything goes according to plan, citizens and families of the hostages could witness a moment tonight that will go down in history as the beginning of the end of one of the longest and most tragic conflicts of our time.
