After the decision on the expulsion of US troops, Trump threatened Iraq with sanctions

(Patria) – US President Donald Trump warned that the US will impose harsh sanctions if Iraq expels US troops due to the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

Let us recall, the Iraqi parliament supported the proposal to terminate the agreement with the US, based on which US troops are present in Iraq, by voting. However, the parliament's decision is not binding and requires confirmation from the Iraqi government.

The targeted assassination of Iranian General Soleimani has triggered a wave of anger in the Middle East, including Iraq, where about 5,000 US soldiers are still present, 17 years after the invasion.

Trump stated that the US will not withdraw until their entire military investment in Iraq is returned. He also said that if they have to withdraw – they will impose economic sanctions on Baghdad.

– We will impose sanctions like they have never seen before. Compared to them, Iranian sanctions will seem mild, Trump said, adding that 'if they do anything we consider unacceptable, we will impose sanctions on Iraq, very big sanctions' and that 'we are not leaving until they pay us back', agencies report.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House will vote on a 'War Powers Resolution' proposal that limits the US President's decisions on military actions towards Iran.
