The investigation into participants of the coup attempt has expanded to police stations in Turkey, resulting in the suspension of 7,850 police officers, including senior police officials, Turkish media report, as carried by Patria.
The list of suspended individuals has been sent to Police Director Mehmet Celalettin.
Suspended police officers were summoned to provincial police stations throughout last night, and their weapons and equipment were confiscated. More than 6,000 suspects from the military and judiciary had already been arrested earlier on suspicion of involvement in the coup attempt.
This is not the first time the Turkish police have undergone major purges and suspensions. In recent years, such actions have been taken against members of the "parallel state," alleged followers of Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic scholar living in exile in the United States.
