After BiH Prosecutor's Office Investigation: Smiljevići Landfill Must Be Remedied to Avoid Catastrophe

Remediation of the Smiljevići landfill in Buča Potok, located three kilometers from the city center, was the reason for the meeting between the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton Elmedin Konaković and the Chief Prosecutor of the BiH Prosecutor's Office Goran Salihović, because after the BiH Prosecutor's Office concluded its investigation, the excavated site was never remediated, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

- This landfill represents a major ecological problem not only for the citizens of Novi Grad Municipality, those living on the slopes of Smiljevići, but also for all residents of the surrounding settlements - emphasized Prime Minister Konaković.

Prosecutor Salihović told the Prime Minister that missing funds are being awaited for the remediation of the incurred damage.

Given that this is a very important project for Sarajevo Canton, Prime Minister Konaković will send a proposal to the Council of Ministers and the BiH Parliament to approve additional funds for the Prosecutor's Office for the remediation of the surface, while Sarajevo Canton could secure IPA funds for the upgrade of the Smiljevići landfill, thus solving this pressing problem in Sarajevo Canton.

It was emphasized at today's meeting that all these activities are being undertaken with the aim of avoiding a major ecological catastrophe threatening Sarajevo Canton if the landfill is not expanded and remediated.
