(Patria) - Greek MEP Eva Kaili has been removed from the position of Vice-President of the European Parliament after being arrested as part of an investigation into corruption within the European Union.
As explained by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, this decision was made today, and this move was supported by 625 votes in favour, one against, and two abstentions.
"This decision comes after Belgian police carried out raids on Monday, including one at the European Parliament office," writes Euronews.
During searches of several apartments, police seized 600,000 euros from the home of one suspect, several hundred thousand euros in a suitcase in a hotel room in Brussels, and about 150,000 euros from the apartment of one MEP.
The arrest of Kaili, as well as other individuals involved in the scandal, came during an investigation into whether Qatar used illicit lobbying methods in the EU. According to the foreign policy magazine Politico, this is a scandal that threatens to cause a major crisis in the Union.
