'Nazi grandma' (95) gets one year and four months in prison for Holocaust denial

(Patria) - A court in Hamburg has sentenced a 95-year-old woman to nearly a year and a half in prison for persistent Holocaust denial, Hina reports.

The indictment against Ursula Haverbeck, an elderly woman known as the "Nazi grandma," stems from her statements in 2015 during the trial of former Nazi member Oskar Gröning, who served as a guard at Auschwitz.

Haverbeck then told journalists that Auschwitz, where historians estimate the Nazis systematically killed at least 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, was a labor camp, not an extermination camp.

The court in Hamburg sentenced her to one year and four months in prison, with four months to be considered served due to long delays in the court proceedings.

Furthermore, the verdict is not final as there is the possibility of an appeal.

Haverbeck was initially sentenced in 2015 by a district court to 10 months in prison without the possibility of probation. She appealed that verdict, but the trial only began nine years later.

Courts have been dealing for years with her statements denying the Holocaust, the greatest tragedy of Jews in history. The extremist was first punished for her statements in 2004, with a fine.

She has already spent more than two years in prison for Holocaust denial.

A Berlin court then sentenced her in 2022 to a one-year prison term for incitement to hatred. She has not yet served that sentence.
