ChatGPT Tops the List: Wikipedia's 25 Most Read Articles of 2023 Published

(Patria) - Wikipedia articles in English had over 84 billion views this year, according to the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the free, publicly editable online encyclopedia.

The most popular article was about ChatGPT technology, reports VOA.

Since its launch just over a year ago, ChatGPT - OpenAI's artificial intelligence-based chatbot - has rapidly gained public attention, and this technology is increasingly entering spheres of society, from schools to the judiciary to religion.

The chatbot has also contributed to the widespread debate about the advantages and dangers of generative artificial intelligence. Much of this information is documented on the Wikipedia page dedicated to ChatGPT.

The second most read article on Wikipedia in 2023 was the annual list of deaths, which records high traffic year after year - in 2022 it was in fourth place, and in 2021 it was in first place.

This year, individual articles about famous deceased individuals, including Matthew Perry and Lisa Marie Presley, also had high readership.

Meanwhile, the long-awaited 2023 Cricket World Cup took third place - and among the 25 most read articles were three more about that sport, including the one about the Indian Premier League, in fourth place.

This is the first time that content dedicated to cricket has made it onto the list that Wikimedia has been publishing since 2015.

Wikimedia announced that this information refers to readership data as of November 28, 2023. Final data for 2023 will be released on January 3, 2024.

The countries from which English Wikipedia articles were most accessed this year are: USA (33.2 billion views), United Kingdom (9 billion), India (8.48 billion), Canada (3.95 billion), and Australia (2.56 billion).
