(Patria) - Representatives of the Alliance countries, at the session on July 10, adopted the Washington Summit Declaration which in 38 points contains everything that should represent NATO's focus in the coming years.
The Allies stated that NATO will strongly and unitedly resist all threats to the security of the alliance.
"NATO remains the strongest alliance in history. We stand united and solidary before the brutal war on the European continent and at a critical moment for our security. NATO is a defensive alliance. Our commitment to defend each other and every inch of allied territory at all times, as contained in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, is ironclad," it was stated.
They also addressed the increased spending of countries when it comes to defense budgets.
"We reaffirm that in many cases, expenditures above 2 percent of GDP will be necessary to remedy existing shortfalls and meet requirements in all domains," the Allies emphasize.
Part of the declaration, specifically point 31, also refers to the Balkan region.
"The Western Balkans and the Black Sea region are of strategic importance to the Alliance. We will continue to enhance our political dialogue and practical cooperation with the Western Balkans to support reforms, regional peace and security, and counter malicious influence. We remain committed to continued NATO engagement in the Western Balkans, including through activities via NATO-led KFOR in Kosovo," they explain in the document.
The Declaration also mentions Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"...We are grateful to our partners for their significant contribution to NATO operations and missions. We welcome Moldova's efforts to continue democratic reforms as it progresses, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, with its European integration, and we are committed to supporting their security and defense capabilities, and to enhancing their capacity to counter hybrid threats. We are also strengthening our engagements with existing and potential new interlocutors outside the Euro-Atlantic area, as this could strengthen our mutual security," is part of the declaration.
