On the Island of Life with 11 buildings, only one person lives

(Patria) - The Bay of Mali Ston, due to favorable conditions since ancient times, has been a perfect place for shellfish farming.

This passage in southern Dalmatia between the Klek and Pelješac peninsulas is also home to the picturesque Island of Life, which the local population also calls Govan or Govanj.

The island is covered with Mediterranean vegetation, mostly Aleppo pine, olives, and maquis.

The Island of Life belongs to the municipality of Ston, and it covers only 0.011 square kilometers in the Bay of Mali Ston.

Although it has very limited space, 11 buildings have been constructed here over the years, which were used for private and public purposes, writes Punkufer.hr.

The island once housed a warehouse for ships, a children's resort, and some facilities were adapted for the research and scientific work of the Institute for Marine Research from Split.

In the last hundred years, the island has changed several owners – it belonged to the Bandur family from Mali Ston, and in the thirties of the last century, it was bought by the wealthy banker and shipowner Božo Banac from Dubrovnik, who built a house for himself and his guests.

After World War II, it became state property, i.e., the property of the municipality of Ston.

Today, only one person lives there – Prospera Pavić, who has spent more than 80 years on the island. And she does not plan to leave. She enjoys the peace and quiet, the beautiful view of the stunning surroundings, and occasional visits from her family from the mainland.
