Fragile ceasefire remains in effect in southern Lebanon despite new Israeli attacks

(Patria) - Israeli aircraft launched an airstrike over a Lebanese border village today, while other border towns and villages under Israeli control were shelled, the Lebanese state media agency reports.

The attacks come days after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, brokered by the United States, came into effect. There are no reports of casualties yet, RSE reports.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the attack on the village of Jarun, nor did the militant group Hezbollah.

Israel continues to ask displaced Lebanese not to return to villages in the south during the current phase of the ceasefire. A ban on crossing the Litani River between 5 PM and 7 AM has also been imposed.

Lebanon's acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the army have criticized Israeli attacks and overflights since the ceasefire came into effect, accusing Israel of violating the agreement.

The army states that it has lodged objections, but Hezbollah has not taken concrete military action in response, meaning the fragile ceasefire remains in effect.

When Israel issued statements about attacks, it stated that they were carried out to prevent potential Hezbollah attacks.

The first phase of the ceasefire is a 60-day truce, during which Hezbollah militants are to withdraw from southern Lebanon, north of the Litani River, while Israeli troops are to withdraw from southern Lebanon into northern Israel.

The Lebanese army is to be deployed in large numbers in the south, making them the only armed force in the region along with UNIFIL peacekeepers.

Meanwhile, Lebanon is trying to secure funds for the country's reconstruction after the war, with World Bank estimates of damage at around $8.5 billion.

They are also trying to recruit and train troops so they can send about 10,000 soldiers to southern Lebanon.
