UN Security Council emergency session warns Israeli plan is 'another dangerous escalation of conflict'

(Patria) - An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was held in New York regarding the situation in the Middle East.

Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, Miroslav Jenča, says that people in the State of Palestine are in "greater danger" and that the new Israeli five-point plan is "another dangerous escalation," reports the BBC.

"We are already witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe of unimaginable proportions," Jenča emphasizes, reiterating calls for a "complete and immediate ceasefire," as well as the release of all hostages.

"Palestinians have the right to have their voice heard," Jenča stresses, adding that the UN supports a two-state solution. He also calls for fair elections.

The meeting was requested by the United Kingdom, along with France, Slovenia, Denmark, and Greece.

Ambassador James Kariuki, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the UN, calls on the Israeli government to reverse its decision to expand the military offensive in Gaza.

He states that the plan will "only deepen the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza" and adds that it is a "path to even greater bloodshed".

The representative of Denmark also condemns the expansion of the conflict and reiterates the UK's appeal to reverse this decision.

The representative of France states that "a red alert should have been raised," as the plan would have "dramatic humanitarian consequences" throughout the Gaza Strip.

"Civilians are already living in terrible conditions," he concluded.
