Popeye the Sailor is returning to the small screen soon

(Patria) - Popeye, the world's most popular sailor, is returning to the small screen soon as he will be the main character in a new film adaptation of the famous comic strip.

Popeye debuted in the comic strip by Elzie Crisler Segar back in the 1920s, since when he has been known as probably the biggest spinach lover in the world, reports Danas.rs.

The new project will be handled by Chernin Entertainment and King Features, and the screenwriter is expected to be Michael Caleo, known for the series "The Sopranos" and "Sexy Beast", and the film "The Family".

This is the first live-action version of Popeye since the self-titled film from 1980, in which Robin Williams played the title role.

The film, directed by Robert Altman and in which Shelley Duvall played the role of Olive, was characterized as very bad upon its release, but over time it gained a certain cult status.

Despite bad reviews, the film was profitable, as it earned $60 million worldwide for Paramount Pictures studio on a budget of $20 million.

Popeye celebrated his 95th birthday this year, and since his first appearance, he has had numerous animated adaptations and a lot of licensed merchandise from almost all spheres of life.

He is a key inspiration for fashion brands "Moschino", "Supreme", and "A Bathing Ape", and he is still the face of the spinach brand called "McCall Farms".

His strength, of course, comes from Popeye when he eats this canned vegetable, and many parents use him as motivation for their children to eat spinach.

As this character remains popular among people of all ages, he has received a series of imagined trailers for non-existent films in which he is mostly presented as a discarded lone warrior.
