(Patria) - Iran and the United States have made some progress in negotiations ahead of the expiry of the two-week truce on April 22, a senior Iranian official said. However, he stressed that deep disagreements remain, particularly over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
According to him, the visit of Pakistani army chief Asim Munir to Iran helped ease differences between Tehran and Washington, increasing the prospects for extending the truce and resuming negotiations. The role of Pakistan was also praised yesterday by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. She described the talks with Iran as "productive" and announced that they will likely be held again in Islamabad.
The main point of contention, according to a regional official cited by the Associated Press, is the issue of uranium enrichment. The United States is demanding that Iran commit to not enriching its stockpiles for the next 20 years. On the other hand, Tehran insists on its right to enrichment, at least at a certain level, and in return offers a five-year suspension of that process.
Iran claims its nuclear program is exclusively for civilian purposes, despite assertions by President Donald Trump that Tehran actually wants to produce nuclear weapons.
According to The Telegraph, the White House is ready to offer Tehran economic incentives, including sanctions relief, if it agrees to US conditions. These conditions include halting all uranium enrichment and ending funding for proxy groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
Other incentives could include securing materials needed for a civilian nuclear program or an energy agreement similar to the one reached with Venezuela. As early as February, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who led Trump's negotiating team, offered Tehran a lifetime supply of free uranium, provided it is used exclusively for civilian purposes. Iran rejected that offer at the time.
