Measures to reduce oil consumption and mitigate prices: fewer air travel, use of public transport, working from home

(Patria) - The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a series of recommendations to mitigate the impact of higher energy prices on consumers, spurred by the war in the Middle East. Measures such as working from home, using public transport, and avoiding air travel are designed for rapid implementation by governments, companies, and households.

They are primarily aimed at road transport, which accounts for about 45% of global oil demand, according to the agency's new report released on Friday.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated that the war is creating "the biggest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market." He added that the proposed measures represent "a series of urgent and concrete steps" that can be taken "to protect consumers from the consequences of this crisis".

Among the Agency's main recommendations is encouraging working from home wherever feasible. It is also proposed to reduce speed limits on highways by at least 10 kilometers per hour.

Citizens are urged to use public transport more or carpool. For large cities, alternating private car use is proposed.

It is also advised to avoid air travel when alternative options exist. One of the recommendations also concerns households, suggesting a switch to alternative cooking methods, such as using electric stoves.
