Mirel Karajić indicted for joining ISIL and fighting in Syria and Iraq

The Head of the Terrorism Department of the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has filed an indictment against Mirel Karajić, born on 02/23/1986 in Velika Kladuša, a citizen of BiH, the Prosecutor's Office of BiH announced, reports the Patria News Agency.

The accused is charged with participating in the battlefields of Syria and Iraq as part of the terrorist group “Dewla Islamiya”, for which citizens of BiH face a prison sentence of several years.

The accused is charged with devising a plan and collecting the necessary funds with the aim of traveling to the territory of Syria and Iraq and joining the terrorist organization of the so-called “ISIL”.

After that, according to the indictment, he sought and obtained information at an illegal mosque near Husein Bosnić, known as “Bilal”, and his associates on how he could go to Syria and join the structures of the so-called “ISIL”, which was declared a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council.

According to the evidence gathered, the accused received contacts with individuals active in the mentioned area and detailed instructions on how to contact them, after which, in November 2014, he traveled by plane to Turkey with three other BiH citizens, and then, with the help of agreed contacts and their instructions, crossed into Syria via an illegal border crossing and joined the terrorist paramilitary formation “Dewla Islamiya”, in which he fought and of which he was an active member for several months, after which he was arrested in Turkey in mid-2015, and subsequently extradited to BiH.

The accused is charged with joining a foreign military or paramilitary formation operating outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina, thereby committing the criminal offense of Illegal Formation and Joining Foreign Paramilitary or Parapolice Formations, the statement said.
