(Patria) - Munich Airport was forced to temporarily close last night following a series of drone reports, disrupting regular air traffic and causing major flight disruptions.
According to airport management, 17 flights were cancelled, affecting around 3,000 passengers, while 15 arriving aircraft were diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Flightradar showed several aircraft circling above the airport around 11 PM before being directed to alternative destinations.
On Friday morning, traffic briefly normalized, but drones were soon spotted again above the airport area itself, confirmed Federal Police spokesperson Stefan Bayer to Bild. He stated that ground officials also confirmed the presence of drones, but due to the darkness, it was not possible to determine the type or size of the aircraft.
Police have opened an investigation, but have so far been unable to identify the drones or their owners.
