
(Patria) - The European Union considers the "Russian regime" solely responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny, the main opponent of President Vladimir Putin, said European Council President Charles Michel.
Navalny (47) died today in an Arctic prison, where he was serving a 19-year sentence.
"Alexei Navalny fought for the values of freedom and democracy. For his ideals, he made the ultimate sacrifice... I send my sincere condolences to his family and to those fighting for democracy around the world. Fighters die, but the struggle for freedom never ends," Michel wrote on platform X.
Navalny died today in a Russian prison in the Arctic Circle where he was serving a 19-year prison sentence, the prison service announced, adding that the cause of death is being determined.
