(Patria) - Meta announced on Friday that it is lifting some restrictions that applied to former US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, Reuters reported.
The social media company suspended Trump's accounts indefinitely after he praised people who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The company then reinstated his accounts in early 2023, saying it would monitor Trump's posts for further violations that could result in a new suspension ranging from one month to two years.
Trump, who is running against US President Joe Biden, will no longer be subject to additional oversight, Meta said.
"In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from presidential candidates on the same basis as everyone else," Meta said.
Some social media experts have long criticized Meta and other platforms for failing to moderate political content, including that of political candidates.
Trump was also banned from Twitter, now called X, in 2021. Billionaire Elon Musk reinstated his account shortly after taking over the company in 2022, and Trump has only posted once on the platform since then.
