Meta to label AI-generated photos on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads

(Patria) - Meta announced that it will implement technology on its social platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Threads that will recognize and then label images generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools from other companies, starting with Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock.

In the coming months, such posts on the mentioned social platforms will be accompanied by a note stating that the content was created using GenAI. Meta also states that the labels will be in 'all languages'.

Meta already labels AI images generated by its own systems with the tag 'Imagined with AI'.

They say they hope the new technology, which they are still developing, will create 'momentum' for the industry to tackle fake content.

However, these tools will not work for audio and video. The company states that instead, it asks users to label their own audio and video posts created with GenAI, as 'otherwise high penalties await them'.
