Merz told Zelensky he can rely on the German government

(Patria) - New German Chancellor Friedrich Merz assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that his government can be relied upon for further support against the Russian invasion, a government spokesperson said on Thursday, Reuters reported.

Merz, who took office this week after his conservatives won the federal elections in February, told Zelensky that Germany supports the mediation efforts of US President Donald Trump, in close coordination with other European partners.

"This includes helping Ukraine to effectively defend itself against Russian aggression and exerting pressure on Russia," the spokesperson said.

Zelensky, in his nightly video address, said he and Merz agreed to work together on issues of common interest.

"There are already concrete things we can do together," he said.

"Decisions will be made."
