(Patria) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised that the new German government will continue to provide strong support to Ukraine and stressed that Germany does not want war.
- It is clear - we are not a party to the war and will not become one. But we are also not an uninterested third party, nor neutral mediators between the sides - Merz stated in his first official address to the Bundestag.
There must be no doubt, he added, that Germany stands unconditionally with the Ukrainians.
- We will counter all attempts by Russia to divide European democratic countries with determination, unity, and a willingness to defend - said the German chancellor.
Merz offered partners and friends a reliable and predictable foreign and security policy - it will serve a strong Europe and will be guided by common interests and European values.
- It is of utmost importance that the political West does not allow itself to be divided. That is why I will continue to make every effort to achieve the greatest possible unity between European and American partners - said Merz.
Recently, an impression was created that US President Donald Trump could make a concession to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the expense of Ukraine and against the will of Europeans in ceasefire negotiations.
Merz emphasizes that there must be no dictating of peace, nor forcing Ukraine to accept the situation on the front line.
- We hope and are all working hard to ensure that this clear stance is represented not only everywhere in Europe, but also by our American partners - added Merz.
At the same time, he thanked Trump for supporting the joint initiative of Germany, France, Poland, and the United Kingdom for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Such a ceasefire can create space for peace negotiations.
