Merz: No place for Ukraine in EU and NATO while it is at war

(Patria) - Future Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Friedrich Merz stated that there is no place for Ukraine in NATO and the EU as long as the fighting and hostility with Russia continue.

Despite Merz's stance, there is no confirmation that Ukraine or its leadership has abandoned membership.

- Ukraine is a very large European country, but it is a European country at war. A country that is in a state of war cannot become a member of NATO or a member of the European Union – Merz stated.

Further rejection for Ukraine followed in February when Hungary vetoed the start of the first phase of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

On the other hand, after the Hungarian veto, diplomats from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia called on Brussels to provide concrete proposals on the country's accession process.
