McGuffie: Develop a legally based solution for police chiefs

Spokesperson for the Delegation of the European Union to BiH and the EU Special Representative, Andy McGuffie, stated for the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP) that, regarding the expiration of the mandate of the chiefs of the Border Police of BiH and the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies, the EU „expects the BiH authorities to develop a legally based and efficient solution for the transitional period.

- Until new chiefs are elected and appointed, we expect that a legally based and efficient solution for the transitional period will be developed, in order to ensure that the police bodies can fully perform their duties – says McGuffie.

From the BiH Ministry of Justice, they claimed yesterday that it is possible for directors Vinko Dumančić and Himzo Selimović to lead the agencies regardless of the expiration of their mandate on March 9.

However, McGuffie emphasizes for NAP that the positions must be filled as soon as possible, noting that this issue has been pending since last year.

- This issue has been pending in the Parliament of BiH since July 2013, when the mandate of the members of the Independent Board expired. It is of crucial importance that the leading positions in the police bodies in question are filled as soon as possible – he states.
