International Day of the Midwife: Saving Lives and Making a Critical Contribution to Global Health

(Patria) - It is the International Day of the Midwife. It is celebrated on May 5, and was established in 1992 by the International Confederation of Midwives. According to certain data, in 1900 a conference was held in Berlin attended by over 1,000 midwives, which is significant given the time period when there were no telephones, computers, credit cards, airplanes, or other means of communication.

A group of midwives from Europe, mainly from Antwerp in Belgium, initiated the formation of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 1919. Today, the ICM has more than 90 members from over 80 countries. The International Day of the Midwife is a support for midwives around the world to celebrate midwifery as a profession.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted that nurses and midwives save lives and make a critical contribution to global health.

"Join us in thanking all nurses, technicians, and midwives for improving people's health," they stated in the WHO.
