(Patria) - Senator Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, has supported a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.
Durbin is the first U.S. senator to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, reports VOA.
When asked by CNN whether it is time for a ceasefire, Durbin said:
"I think it is. We acknowledge, this has been going on for decades. Regardless of the justification from the beginning, it has reached an unbearable level. We need a resolution in the Middle East that offers some promises for the future."
Durbin's use of the term "ceasefire" is a departure from the language used by U.S. President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish member of Congress in history.
Jewish activists welcomed Durbin's statement and sent the following message:
"Thank you, Senator Durbin, for supporting a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and putting an end to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza."
