McCarthy says House will investigate President Biden, seeks impeachment

(Patria) - The US House of Representatives will open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, its top Republican has said, BBC reports.

Kevin McCarthy said the investigation would focus on "allegations of abuse of power,
obstruction, and corruption" by Biden.

Republicans have been investigating the president since taking control of the House in January. No concrete evidence of Biden's misconduct has been found in hearings. They have, however, focused more on the business dealings of his son Hunter Biden and on Biden's involvement in his son's activities.

In a brief statement, McCarthy said there were "serious and credible" allegations relating to the president's conduct. "The allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption," he said.
The White House quickly condemned McCarthy's decision. "House Republicans have been investigating the president for nine months and have found no evidence of wrongdoing," White House spokesperson Ian Sams wrote on social media.

Hunter Biden is currently under federal investigation for possible tax offenses
related to his foreign business interests.

McCarthy also stated that the president's family had received special treatment from Biden administration officials. The White House has denied any involvement in Hunter Biden's case and said President Biden has no connection to his son's business operations.

The US Constitution states that a president can be impeached for "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors," a process that can end with his removal from office. However, any attempt to remove Biden is unlikely to succeed.

The House of Representatives, where Republicans have a narrow 222-212 majority, is expected to vote "yes." It would then proceed to a trial in the Senate and a vote there. Democrats have a majority in the Senate and would almost certainly dismiss the proceedings if they got that far.

Donald Trump, the only US president to be investigated in this manner twice, was acquitted of charges by his Republican colleagues on both occasions.
